Stanley was the son of a former coal miner, he had an older sister Phyllis and a younger sister Doreen. He married Gertrude Mary Mahoney of Cotham, Bristol at the end of 1943 and they had one son Christopher.

Stanley served with the 9th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry. He Died of Wounds during the battle of the Falaise Pocket when his Infantry was attacking hills south of St. Pierre la Vielle and is buried in Bayeux War Cemetery (I. C. 12.), Calvados, France.
