Further information:

On the day of his death, Stanley was serving aboard the unescorted Norwegian Motor Tanker, the John P Pedersen which had separated from convoy HX-126 that same day. The ship was on route from Halifax Canada to Clyde, Scotland, carrying a cargo of 9100 tons of Admiralty fuel oil. At 18.17 hours on 20 May 1941, about 160 miles south of Greenland, the vessel was hit by 3 torpedoes from U-boat U-94 and finally sank an hour later. Stanley was killed during the attack but the survivors managed to board 2 lifeboats. However only one boat was ever found and the Master and a further 20 people perished.
