Stanley was the son of a labourer, he had an older sister Evelyn and a younger sister Stephanie. He married Doris Sprules in the summer of 1931 and they had one son Stanley in 1933.

Stanley served with the 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (sharpshooters) who took part in the D-Day landings but owing to significant losses were later amalgamated. They were also involved in the Rhineland Campaign in early in 1945, but Stanley’s death was registered in Bristol, so it is likely that he was on leave when he died.
