Stephen Francis was born in the St George’s area of Bristol in 1898 to George and Sophia Francis of Elm View Cottage, Yate. Brother to William, Harry, John, Clifford, Elizabeth, Mary, Frederick and Cora. Like his father George, who was from Wellow is Somerset, Stephen worked as a Strontin or Celestine digger before the war. In the 1911 census the family are listed as living at Raysfield Strontin Works, Chipping Sodbury, Bristol

Stephen enlisted in Bristol and served with the 10th (Service) Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment. He was Killed in Action on the 13th October 1915 and is remembered on the Loos Memorial, Ref: Panel 60 to 64, in France. Steven was only 17 years old

Stephen Francis is remembered on the Yate Lych Gate Memorial and the Chipping Sodbury and District War Memorial Cottage Hospital board, which is now at Yate and District Heritage Centre, under Yate (as G Francis)
