On the 1901 Census, the family lived on Badminton Street, Badminton. Stephen Snr was a butcher and Stephen Jnr was recorded on the Census as Alfred. At the time, Stephen Alfred was the only son and had five sisters.
The family still lived in Badminton by the time of the 1911 Census, but Stephen Alfred was not at home, but he had two younger brothers.
Stephen Alfred enlisted in the Canadian Infantry in October 1914 and served with the 28th Battalion. He arrived in France with his unit in September 1915.
The Commonwealth war graves register record his parents as living in Canada, but the army service papers record them as being in Badminton and the Canadian Memorial Cross was sent to his mother Annie in Badminton.
Stephen Alfred is commemorated at the Badminton Memorial Hall and the Yate and District Heritage Centre, Chipping Sodbury Cottage Hospital Memorial Board.
