Thomas was born in Warmley, the son of a fireman and a middle child of fourteen children with three sisters and ten brothers, two of whom died as young children. Thomas married Eva Violetta Paget on 8th March 1919 but just six weeks later he died.
Thomas enlisted in the Navy in April 1910 at the age of 18. At the time he was described as 5'6 ½ " tall with dark brown hair, brown eyes and a fresh complexion. His first ship was HMS Blake and he served on various ships in both peacetime and wartime. Thomas continued to serve in the Navy after the Armistice and his last ship was H.M.S. Vivid II. He died of septic meningitis in the Royal Naval Hospital Plymouth on 21st April 1919.
