Thomas was commissioned as a Flight Lieutenant in the Auxiliary Air Force (Medical branch) in August 1939 and was attached to the 928 (County of Gloucester) Squadron. The unit was formed as a barrage balloon unit and was initially based in Pucklechurch.
He subsequently transferred to the 322 Wing RAF (Fighter plane squadrons) which was serving in North Africa. He was promoted to the rank of Squadron Leader (Medical branch) in March 1942. Thomas drowned whilst swimming when based in Tripoli (source – RAF Command Forum).
Thomas married Phyllis Edna Trist (married 7.9.1935). Thomas and Phyllis had three children – Margaret M b.1936, Thomas H R b.1938 and Penelope A b.1942. Phyllis remarried in 1946 and died in 2002 (Buried in Bitton)
