Thomas was the son of a docker and was born and raised in Swansea. He was the second youngest of 5 children with 2 older brothers an older sister and a younger brother. Thomas married Violet May Penhorwood in 1931 and together they had 2 children.
Thomas enlisted in the Royal Artillery in 1941 and on the day of his death Thomas was serving aboard the British Motor Merchant 'Otina' a straggler from convoy ON-153, on route from Belfast to New York carrying a cargo of ballast. At 20.21 hours on 20 Dec 1942 the vessel was hit by two torpedoes from U-boat U-621 and sank 45 minutes later west of Ireland. The master, 52 crew members and seven gunners, including Thomas, were lost. There were no survivors. Thomas was originally reported as missing which was changed to presumed killed in action 14 months later.
