Further information:

William lodged with the Reverend Barker and his family at Olveston Vicarage before joining the RAF in 1940. He competed his pilot training in 1941 in the USA and was promoted to sergeant then posted to Number 7 operational training unit at Limavady, Northern Ireland. On the day of his death William was on a routine night training exercise in Wellington, HX 448 with a Canadian crew of 5 others, heading for Rockall. When they were overdue at their destination by an hour, they were reported as missing, which was later changed to presumed dead. It is possible that the plane crashed on the Isle of Soay, Inner Hebrides.
