Verdun enlisted in Somerset light infantry then transferred to the corps of the military police in December 1940, serving on home soil. The duties of the Military Police were varied but predominantly were to enforce law and order within the regular army.

Verdun's death was registered in Aldershot, Surrey, the home of the British Army and his military records state that he died from an unspecified accident.
