On some records the Christian names are recorded as Charles William.
As his mother died young, Williams father Charles lived with his mother Phoebe and stepfather Albert. After the war, Phoebe made a claim for a dependants pension, but this was refused.
William joined initially served with the Merchant Navy and then joined the Royal Navy in January 1916, but he was discharged after just over a month with pulmonary tuberculosis. William died in 1917 (date unknown – burial date 7/04/1917).
