Further information:

Walter was born in Bristol, the only son of a railway plate layer. He enlisted in the 10th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment prior to his 18th birthday and died from wounds sustained in the Battle of Pozieres Ridge, one of the Battles of the Somme. The cemetery where he is buried was used by the 3rd and 44th Casualty Clearing Stations, where he would have been taken when he fell.
