William was born in St. George in Bristol, the eldest child and only son of a miner with four younger sisters. The family moved to South Wales where both father and son worked down the mines. By 1911, William's mother had died, his father had remarried and William had acquired a stepbrother and stepsister. William married Elizabeth Susannah Collier in 1909 and together they had a son William Thomas.

William enlisted in December of 1915 in the Devonshire Regiment before transferring within the Regiment to the Labour Corps, 176th Labour Company. On the 7th of November 1918 he was discharged due to sickness and just over a year later he died at home in Wales.
