Walter's Regiment fought as part of the 8th Army in the Western Desert Campaign. Walter lost his life during the battle of Mersa Matruh on the Egyptian coast. The battle was the last allied defeat before the 1st Battle of El Alamein and Mersa Matruh became the site of Rommel's headquarters.
