Walter was born in Great Coxwell, Berkshire, the son of a steam roller driver and one of four brothers.

Walter served with the 2nd Battalion, (Duke of Edinburgh's) Wiltshire Regiment. Walter's battalion mobilised to Belgium in October 1914 and fought in the Battles of Ypres and Loos. Walter died of wounds in the run up to the Battle of the Somme and Daours where he is buried was the site of a casualty clearing station where he would have been taken when he had fallen.
