Lance Bombardier (not Gunner as on Memorial)

Walter's mother, Amy, was a single parent and 19 years old when Walter was born. In 1939 Walter’s mother was working as a midwife in Salisbury and Walter was living in Portsmouth.

On the day of his death Walter was serving aboard the British Steam Merchant, ‘Muneric’ which was part of convoy SC-42 on route from Rio de Janeiro to Middlesbrough, carrying a cargo of 7000 tons of iron ore. At 02.30 hours on 10 Sep 1941, South of Cape Farewell Greenland, U-boat U-432 fired four single torpedoes at three ships in the convoy and 2 torpedoes hit and sank the Muneric. The master, 55 crew members, five gunners, including Walter and two stowaways were lost. There were no survivors.
