Walter William Gibbs was born in Hambrook in 1888, the only son of John and Ellen Rachel Gibbs. John Gibbs was an Assistant Overseer, Births & Deaths

Walter was a fellow of the Royal Geographic Society, was for two years a member of the Bolivian Boundary Commision, was engaged for three years on survey work in the Mozembique Companies territory and obtained permission to return to Portugese East Africa in August 1917, when he was gazetted Second Lieutenant with the Royal Engineers

He married Miss Dorothy R Gibbs (formerly Skinner), shortly before going to France
