Further information:
Walter was born in Almondsbury, the son of a farm carter and the second youngest of seven children with four brothers and two sisters.
Walter served with the 9th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment in the Balkan theatre of war and went missing in Salonika during the Battle of Doiran (22 April 1917 - 9 May 1917) which was a British defeat that resulted in 12,000 casualties. Walter's body was never found and his death was presumed. The Doiran Memorial where he is remembered stands roughly in the centre of the line occupied for two years by the Allies in Macedonia, close to the western end. It marks the scene of fierce fighting of 1917-1918, which caused the majority of the battle casualties and is a place of commemoration for more than 2,000 Commonwealth servicemen who died in Macedonia and whose graves are not known.
