Wilfred Clark was born in 1893 in Yate. Wilfred was the son of John and Fanny Clark. He was brother to Ethel, Jacob, Herbert and Teresa. His father was a miner and he was born in Yate. In 1911 the family lived in Yate Rocks and Wilfred was working as a gardener’s labourer

Wilfred joined the Royal Navy and served on HMS Monmouth, he was Killed in Action at the Battle of Coronel, off the coast of Chile. Wilfred's body was not recovered for burial. HMS Monmouth capsized taking her entire crew of 735 men with her, as the seas were too rough to attempt any rescue effort. He was 21 years old when he died in 1914
