Wilfred was born in Kingswood, the son of a stone-breaker and a middle child of ten with four brothers and five sisters. An older brother Alfred also died on active service but another brother Ernest who saw active service survived the war.
Wilfred served with the 335th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. Wilfred died of wounds most probably during the Battle of the Lys (7 – 29 April 1918) which was the last German victory of WW1 and resulted in 119,000 allied casualties. Wilfred was buried in the cemetery adjacent to the Advanced Dressing Station where he would have been taken.
