Died: 20th May 1940 (Incorrectly stated on the Memorial as 1943).
William was fighting in France with his regiment as part of the British Expeditionary Force. By May 1940 the Germans had the allies on the run and were pushing them towards the French coast and defeat. Ultimately the troops had to be evacuated through Dunkirk but William died in the fighting 7 days before this happened.
