The only child and son of a railway porter, William was murdered whilst his ship was undergoing a refit with radar equipment in the Clyde shipyard. He died at HMCS Niobe Greenock, as a result of haemorrhage from stab wounds to the abdomen. HMCS Niobe was a Canadian Naval shore establishment that functioned as an accounting base, manning pool for personnel awaiting ships and hospitalisation centre for RCN personnel.
William served on the H.M.S. Newfoundland, Royal Marines.
