Williams father was the owner/farmer of Washing Pool Farm in Hallen Marsh. William left the family home around 1903 and went to New Zealand to farm on his own account. He enlisted in the New Zealand forces at the end of 1917 serving with the 2nd Battalion, Auckland Regiment, New Zealand Expeditionary Force and after arriving in the UK went to France in July 1918. He was Killed in Action on 30/09/1918.
William is commemorated on the Hallen Road, Hallen memorial and the Henbury (St Mary’s Church) memorial.
