William was born in St. George in Bristol, the son of a labourer and a middle child of seven with five sisters and one brother. William married Minnie Sampson a boot machinist in 1913 and his daughter Olive Doreen was born the following year. William Douglas his son was born in 1919 a month before William’s discharge. The couple went on to have at least two more children after the war. William was called up in January 1917 and served on the home front. He was discharged in June 1919 as physically unfit owing to visual problems. He died of natural causes 36 years later.
