William was born in Devon and lived there all his life. He was the son of a carpenter and had an older sister and a younger brother. He married Dorothy Beatrice Lear in May of 1936 and by 1939 they had 2 children.

William died at sea, killed in action. He was initially reported as missing which was changed to presumed killed 12 months later. The circumstances around his death are unknown.
