Further information:
William was born in Acton Turville, the son of a farm carter and the eldest child of four children with two sisters and a brother.
William enlisted in the Rifle Brigade and served with "D" Company, 7th Battalion. At the end of August 1914 and at the time of his enlistment, he was described as 5’ 5½ “ tall with black hair, brown eyes and a sallow complexion. He was stationed at Aldershot when he developed chronic nephritis and was admitted to hospital for seven weeks. He was subsequently discharged from the Army, as physically unfit, after just eight months of service. William married Florence Eleanor Norton in the spring of 1917 and was living in Middlesex when he died at home in the Autumn of 1918, probably as a result of his ongoing kidney disease.
