William Ewart Criddle was born in 1892 in Frenchay to parents, George and Harriet Criddle. He was brother to Annie, Harold, Lillian, Arthur, Florence and Dorothy. Their father was a general labourer and their mother was a laundress in her own right. William was a well known football player in the Frenchay AFC. William had attended Frenchay School at the age of 14 years old and became a butcher's assistant. William married Edith Moon in 1915, their son Roy was born in 1916

William Enlisted in Bristol in 1916 and served with the 7th Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment and was Killed in Action in Mesopotamia on the 10th February 1917. William is buried in the Amara Cemetery, Iraq

Arthur George Criddle, William's brother also died in 1917
