William was born in Paulton, Somerset, the son of a bootmaker and the second eldest of six children with two sisters and three brothers.
William served with "B" Company, 2nd/6th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment. William's regiment mobilised for war and landed in France in May 1916 where they engaged in various actions on the Western Front including The Attack at Fromelles and The Operations on the Ancre. William died at the 36th Casualty Clearing Station from wounds received in fighting during the Pursuit of the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line. (14 March – 5 April 1917). The cemetery where he is buried was located near to the Casualty Clearing Station.
