Further information:

William was the son of a farm labourer and had an older sister Lena Mary. In 1939 he was living with 2 younger brothers one who was also a council worker the other a tile maker.
William’s battalion served in Northern Ireland but saw no action. However, the Luftwaffe undertook a series of 4 bombing raids on Belfast due to its importance to ship building. The city was poorly defended and unprepared as it was assumed that its distance was out of range of the German planes. As a result, casualties were extremely high. On the night of the 4th May the bombing was focussed particularly on the twin islands harbour area where William was killed.
