William served with the 12th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment as a private. William Gulwell died of wounds on the 28th July 1916 aged 32 years.He is buried at the Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L’Abbe, France

William is named on the Badminton Memorial board in Badminton Village Hall and the Chipping Sodbury and District War Memorial Hospital board, now at Yate and District Heritage Centre
