He died on a training flight in Wellington bomber LN536. The bomber took off from RAF Chipping Warden at 19.15 hours on a night cross country exercise and after 3 and half hours the aircraft caught fire in the air and crashed, half a mile from the village of Lavendon, Buckinghamshire. The fire service attended but could not get near because of exploding ammunition and all 6 aircrew perished.
