William was the son of a railway engine driver and one of four children. He had at least 2 brothers, one older and one younger. He enlisted in the Royal Artillery in 1941.

On the day of his death, William was serving aboard the unescorted British Steam Merchant 'Baron Ogilvy' on route from Rio de Janeiro Brazil to Freetown Sierra Leone, carrying a cargo of 5150 tons of iron ore. At 12.55 hours on 29 Sep 1942 the vessel was hit by two torpedoes from U-boat U-125 southwest of Cape Palmas, Liberia and sank in 8 minutes. Four crew members and four gunners including William, were lost. The 30 survivors escaped in one damaged lifeboat, the others being destroyed, and spent 22 days at sea before being picked up and landed at Cape Town.
