On the day of his death William was serving aboard the British Motor Merchant 'Jedmoor ' which was part of convoy SC-42 on route from Sydney Australia to Glasgow Scotland carrying a cargo of 7400 tons of iron ore. At 23.16 hours on 16 Sep 1941 the vessel was torpedoed and sunk northwest of St. Kilda Scotland by U-boat U-98. The master, 25 crew members and five gunners including William were lost. There were 5 survivors.
