1055 Port Operating Company Royal Engineers.
William married Olive Pates in the Autumn of 1938 and in June 1944 his company went over to France in support of the D-Day invasion force. Their role was to repair the extensive damage done by the Germans to the Normandy ports, in particular Le Havre, in order to allow free flow of shipping and debarkation of troops from the UK.
William's death (cause not specified) was registered in Manchester, so it is likely that he was on leave at the time.
