William attended St Mary on the Quay School until the age of 14. The family moved to Ansteys Road in Hanham in the late 1930’s. William helped to run the family greengrocery business. Local deliveries took them as far as Warmley and Toghill. He was married to Millicent Joyce Scully
From an early age his one ambition was to join the Navy and he signed at the earliest possible age for the Merchant Navy. During the war men from the Merchant Navy could volunteer to serve with the Royal Navy and William served as a Greaser and Donkey Man (stoker). He died of accidental drowning in Bombay, India
