William was born at Olveston the son of a mason and the second eldest of four brothers. In 1908 he married Agnes Hilda Latham who was a domestic servant and Kathleen was born later that year. William and his family moved to Bridgend and Edwin and Jack were born in 1910 and 1914 respectively.
William enlisted in the Army Troops Company, Royal Engineers in July 1915 and embarked for France in January 1916. He was promoted to Corporal two months later and Mentioned in Despatches in May 1918 when he was also awarded the Oak Leaf Emblem. William was demobilised after the war in March 1919 and his fourth child also William was born in 1920. He died in 1921 from pulmonary tuberculosis contracted during his war service.
