William Robert McCarragher was born in 1884 in the barracks in Devizes. His parents were Elizabeth Jane and Sergeant Robert McCarragher. William's father had served in the South African Company when he died his mother remarried and became Elizabeth Bridle

William was married to Elizabeth Annie and they had a son called William and a daughter called Evelyn. They lived at Hatters Lane in Chipping Sodbury

William was a professional soldier he enlisted in London. He joined the 1st Battalion of the Duke of Edinburgh (Wiltshire Regiment) and became a Company Sergeant Major. He died in France on active service in January 1915 at the age of 29. He is buried in Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery in Belgium. He was awarded the Victory, British, 14 Star and Clasp/2/2679 medals
