Ernest was born and raised in Merthyr Tydfil, the son of a labourer. He married Winifred M. Jenkins in 1940 and enlisted in the Royal Artillery in 1941.

Ernest was washed overboard from the ship on which he was serving and initially he was reported as missing presumed drowned. Three months later his records were changed to “died as the result of an accident” when his body was found and he was subsequently buried in Southampton.
