George Benjamin Howell was born in 1895 in Inglestone Common, Hawkesbury, Glos. He was the brother of Miss Mary J Howell

George served with the 1st Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment. On 20th August 1916 on the Somme, the Battalion were ordered to occupy trenches to the west of High Wood. They would hold the trenches for the next seven days in the face of heavy shell fire. During this period the battalion had 46 men killed and further 141 wounded. Amongst the wounded was Private George Howell, who was evacuated to the casualty clearing station at Dernancourt, where he died of his wounds on 23 August 1916

George Benjamin Howell is remembered on the Chipping Sodbury and District War Memorial Cottage Hospital board, now at Yate and District Heritage Centre under Hawkesbury
