John William Millard was born in Hawkesbury Upton in 1896. His father was landlord of the Beaufort Arms in Hawkesbury Upton

On 16th September 1916 John went over the top in an attack with the 7th Battalion. Days later, his parents received a telegram to say that he has been badly wounded in the attack. Within days, they received a further letter from a nurse near the front informing them that their son had died of his wounds

John William Millard is remembered on the Chipping Sodbury and District War Memorial Cottage Hospital board, now at Yate and District Heritage Centre under Hawkesbury
