Further information:

Joseph was the son of a ship's steward. He had an older brother who was also a seaman and another brother and a sister.

On the day of his death, Joseph was out on a routine military exercise on the sea off the coast of Cornwall. He was shot accidentally by his friend, another gunner, whilst he was sleeping on the motor boat with his head in close proximity to a machine gun barrel. His friend was examining the mechanism of the gun when it went off accidentally, killing Joseph instantly. Joseph’s death was registered in Penzance and he was buried near his home.
