William was married to Ellen Bentley.

On the day of his death William was serving aboard the British Steam Merchant, the Muneric which was part of convoy SC-42 on route from Rio de Janeiro to Middlesbrough, carrying a cargo of 7000 tons of iron ore. At 02.30 hours on 10 Sep 1941, South of Cape Farewell Greenland, U-boat U-432 fired four single torpedoes at three ships in the convoy and 2 torpedoes hit and sank the Muneric. The master, 55 crew members, five gunners, including William, and two stowaways were lost. There were no survivors.
