William was the son of a cotton weaver and one of five boys. He married Hilda Farrer in 1941.
On the day of his death, William was serving aboard the British Steam Merchant the Zouave which was part of convoy SC-122 on route from Halifax Canada to Middlesbrough carrying a cargo of 7100 tons of iron ore. At 23.09 hours on 17 March 1943, southeast of Cape Farewell Greenland, U-boat U-305 fired two torpedoes at the convoy hitting the Port Auckland and the Zouave. The latter sank in 5 minutes. 12 crew members and one gunner, William, perished. The 30 survivors were rescued and landed at Gourock, Scotland.
