Historic sites across South Gloucestershire will open their doors between 12–21 September for Heritage Open Days 2025, England’s largest festival of history and culture.
Heritage Open Days brings together over 2,500 organisations, 5,000 events, and 40,000 volunteers. Every year in September, places across the country open their doors to celebrate their heritage, community, and history.
The scheme provides free access to heritage sites and events, giving residents and visitors the chance to discover hidden treasures and enjoy unique experiences that celebrate the history of South Gloucestershire, including its people and places.
This year South Gloucestershire offers a wide range of activities, from guided tours of medieval churches and historic collieries to family festivals, country house visits, and opportunities to explore unique industrial landmarks.
From the rolling landscapes of Badminton and Horton to the industrial heritage of Kingswood and Warmley, and the historic churches of Bitton, Winterbourne, and Thornbury, this year’s programme offers a rich and diverse selection of events. Whether your interests lie in architecture, engineering, faith, or community stories, there’s something to discover in every corner of the district.
Councillor Chris Willmore, South Gloucestershire Council Cabinet Member and Heritage Champion, said: “We are delighted to invite everyone to Heritage Open Days 2025. This is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate our heritage and discover some of the amazing places, stories, and people that make South Gloucestershire so special.
“I know firsthand how much work the volunteers put into welcoming visitors on Heritage Open Days to give people a special opportunity to peak behind the scenes at our amazing local sites. A huge thank you goes to everyone who is helping this year. With such a wide range of events from historic sites and houses to local festivals, there truly is something for everyone to enjoy.”
