Sustainable travel in Yate is getting a boost as work begins on the new Yate Park and Ride.
The new transport hub will help reduce traffic along the congested A432 Badminton Road corridor by encouraging people to use alternative travel options such as public transport, cycling or car sharing.
The £3.6 million facility is being built on Badminton Road adjacent to the South Gloucestershire Council offices and will include 198 parking spaces, 38 electric vehicle (EV) charge points and secure cycle parking for 46 bikes, as well as improved bus stops.
The site will provide an initial park and ride service using the existing bus network, and will later benefit from the planned extension of metrobus services to the area.
It will also be available for rail users at Yate Station, which is just an eight-minute walk from the site.
South Gloucestershire Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Environment and Strategic Infrastructure Cllr Steve Reade said: “It is great to see work starting on the Yate Park and Ride site.
“This new facility is part of our commitment to creating more green travel options for our residents and will contribute towards our Climate Change ambitions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”
West of England Mayor Tim Bowles said: “The new Yate Park and Ride is another example of how the Combined Authority is getting our region moving. By giving people viable alternatives to using their car, we are tackling congestion, getting emissions down and improving air quality. I can’t wait to see it up and running.”
As part of the preparations on site a number of tree saplings have been removed to protect them from the works about to start. These saplings are being kept safe and will be replanted within the park and ride site in the autumn.
The Yate Park and Ride is expected to open later in the year.
