Arthur was born in Bristol, the son of a pedlar and a middle child of seven children with two sisters and four brothers. His younger sister died as a child. In 1911 Arthur was working in an iron foundry in Wales and he married Mary Smart in 1918.
Arthur enlisted in the Army in July 1915 and saw service on the Western Front, he served with the 3rd/1st South Midland Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. He was wounded in September 1917 and was awarded a wound stripe. Arthur survived the war and was discharged from the Army in April 1919 on the grounds of disability. He is on the memorial but he survived for another 50 years.
