Further information:

Arthur was born and raised in Kingswood, the son of a grocer's porter and a middle child of six with three brothers and two sisters, one of whom died in infancy.

Arthur died during The Battle of the Somme after only a few weeks at the front. The battle commenced on 1st July 1916 when 13 divisions of Commonwealth forces, including the 10th Glosters, launched an offensive on a line from north of Gommecourt to Maricourt. Preliminary bombardment lasted seven days, but German defences were barely touched and there was unexpected fierce resistance. This resulted in catastrophic losses over the following 12 weeks until Thiepval, the original objective, was finally captured. Arthur was killed during this fighting just a few weeks after arriving at the front and The Battle of the Somme continued until 18th November 1916 accounting for over 1 million allied and German casualties.
