Fred was born in St. George in Bristol, the son of a hairdresser and the second eldest of five children with three sisters and one brother.

Fred was serving in the Medical Corps and died from an unspecified illness, probably in one of the several stationary general hospitals belonging to the Allies, that were located in the town of St Omer where he is buried.
