Alfred was born in St. Philips in Bristol, the son of a painter and a middle child of seven with three brothers and three sisters. He married Mary Parker in 1898 and together they had eight children, four girls and four boys. Alfred's youngest child was aged 4 when Alfred died.
Alfred enlisted in September 1914 and was described as 5'7" tall with brown hair and grey eyes. He served initially on the home front then was mobilised to France in December 1915 where he served in various actions on the Western Front until being posted back home in January 1917. He was discharged in March of 1917 as physically unfit and died at home from tuberculosis two years later and four months after the war had ended.
