Further information:
Alfred was born in St George, Bristol, the son of a bootmaker and the youngest of three children with an older brother and sister. Alfred and all of his family were employed in the boot industry and he married Lilian Gertrude Jenkins in 1916.
Alfred enlisted in the Territorial Force in 1914 and later joined the 2nd/5th Battalion that was mobilised to France in 1916, where he would have taken part in various major actions on the Western Front. Alfred was killed in action near Armentieres in Northern France and the date of his death and the location of his memorial suggest that he died during the day to day trench warfare, typical of this part of the line in this region.
